About this tool
Chocolate contains theobromine, which dogs metabolize very slowly. Darker chocolate = more theobromine = more dangerous.
This calculator uses published theobromine values (mg per gram) and standard veterinary toxicity thresholds to estimate mg per kg of body weight.
All calculations happen in your browser. No data is sent or stored anywhere.
FAQ
How much chocolate is dangerous for a dog?
It depends on the type and the dogโs weight. Roughly: mild signs from ~20 mg theobromine per kg, serious risk above ~40 mg/kg. Dark and baking chocolate are far more dangerous than milk.
My dog ate chocolate an hour ago and seems fine?
Symptoms can take 6โ12 hours. "Seems fine" means nothing yet โ call your vet now.
Should I make my dog vomit?
Only if your vet instructs you to. Never induce vomiting on your own.
What about cats?
Cats are also sensitive to theobromine, but rarely eat chocolate. The math is similar โ and the same "call your vet" rule applies.
