Rats safety guide
Rat owners often mistake human-safe foods for rat-safe treats, not realizing that even small amounts of certain spices or oils can be fatal. They also frequently overlook the danger of small, non-toxic objects that can cause life-threatening intestinal blockages.
π« Keep away from rats
- Avocado β Contains persin, a fungicidal toxin that can cause respiratory distress and heart damage in rats.
- Chocolate β Theobromine and caffeine are stimulants that can lead to seizures, rapid heart rate, and death.
- Onions and Garlic β These alliums destroy red blood cells, leading to hemolytic anemia which can be fatal.
- Macadamia Nuts β While less studied in rats than dogs, they contain oils that can cause severe gastrointestinal distress and weakness.
- Alcohol β Even tiny amounts can cause hypoglycemia, respiratory depression, and organ failure due to their small size.
- Caffeine β Found in coffee, tea, and energy drinks, it acts as a potent stimulant that can trigger cardiac arrest.
- Xylitol β This artificial sweetener causes a rapid release of insulin, leading to dangerous drops in blood sugar.
- Essential Oils β Highly concentrated plant extracts can be toxic when ingested or absorbed through the skin, causing liver damage.

- Bell Peppers β A crunchy, vitamin-rich snack that is completely safe and loved by most rats.
- Carrots β Provide a sweet, crunchy texture and are easy to digest in small pieces.
- Blueberries β Antioxidant-rich berries that make for a healthy and tasty occasional treat.
- Plain Oatmeal β Unflavored and uncooked or lightly cooked, it is a great source of fiber and energy.
- Cucumber β High in water content, making it a hydrating and low-calorie snack option.
- Banana β A soft, sweet treat that should be given in small slices due to its high sugar content.
- Plain Popcorn β Air-popped and unsalted, it is a fun, low-fat snack that satisfies their chewing instinct.
