Hamsters safety guide
Many owners mistakenly assume that if an item is safe for dogs or cats, it is safe for hamsters, but their tiny size and sensitive digestive systems make them vulnerable to choking and chemical exposure. The biggest oversight is often ignoring the toxicity of certain plant-based materials and the danger of small, non-food objects that can cause fatal intestinal blockages.
π« Keep away from hamsters
- Cedar shavings β The strong aromatic oils in cedar can cause respiratory distress and skin irritation in hamsters.
- Avocado β It contains persin, a fungicidal toxin that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and respiratory issues in rodents.
- Onions and garlic β These alliums contain compounds that damage red blood cells, leading to anemia and potential organ failure.
- Chocolate β Theobromine and caffeine in chocolate are highly toxic to hamsters and can cause heart arrhythmias and seizures.
- Citrus fruits β The high acidity and essential oils in citrus can cause severe gastrointestinal upset and mouth sores.
- Rhubarb leaves β They contain high levels of oxalic acid, which can lead to kidney failure and bladder stones.
- Macadamia nuts β These nuts are extremely difficult for hamsters to digest and can cause severe lethargy and neurological symptoms.
- Scented candles β The smoke and chemical fragrances can irritate a hamster's delicate respiratory system and cause long-term health issues.
