Gerbils safety guide
Many owners mistake general rodent safety for gerbil-specific needs, often overlooking that gerbils have sensitive respiratory systems and a strong urge to dig. The biggest mistake is assuming that if a hamster can eat it, a gerbil can, or that standard cage bedding is safe without checking for dust or chemical additives.
π« Keep away from gerbils
- Cedar shavings β The aromatic oils in cedar can cause respiratory distress and liver damage in gerbils.
- Scented litter β Strong artificial fragrances can irritate their delicate lungs and cause chronic respiratory issues.
- Avocado β It contains persin, a fungicidal toxin that can be fatal to small rodents.
- Chocolate β Theobromine is highly toxic to gerbils and can lead to heart failure and death.
- Onions and garlic β These alliums destroy red blood cells, leading to anemia and potential organ failure.
- Citrus fruits β The high acidity and essential oils can cause severe gastrointestinal upset and mouth sores.
- Rhubarb leaves β They contain oxalic acid, which can cause kidney failure in small animals.
- Pine shavings β While less toxic than cedar, the strong scent can still trigger respiratory irritation in sensitive gerbils.
β Generally fine for gerbils
- Paper-based bedding β Unscented, dust-free paper bedding is the gold standard for keeping their lungs healthy.
- Timothy hay β Essential for dental health and digestion, providing the fiber they need to process food.
- Unflavored oatmeal β A great occasional treat that is easy to digest and helps with hydration.
- Bell pepper β Sweet, non-spicy peppers are a safe, crunchy vegetable option rich in vitamins.
- Carrot β A classic safe treat, though it should be given in moderation due to its sugar content.
- Apple (without seeds) β The flesh is safe and sweet, but the seeds contain trace amounts of cyanide so they must be removed.
- Cucumber β High water content makes this a refreshing summer treat for staying hydrated.
- Plain unsweetened yogurt drops β A safe, calcium-rich treat that is easy for them to handle and eat.
