Geckos safety guide
Many owners mistakenly assume that if a plant is safe for cats, it is safe for geckos, but reptiles have different metabolic processes that make certain compounds far more lethal to them. Additionally, people often overlook the danger of scented candles and essential oils, which can cause severe respiratory distress in small, sensitive animals.
๐ซ Keep away from geckos
- Essential Oil Diffusers โ The concentrated vapors can cause severe respiratory irritation and organ damage in geckos due to their small size and sensitive lungs.
- Scented Candles โ The smoke and chemical fragrances release particulates that are difficult for geckos to filter out, leading to chronic respiratory issues.
- Lilies โ All parts of the lily plant are highly toxic to reptiles and can cause kidney failure if ingested or even if pollen is inhaled.
- Avocado โ Avocados contain persin, a fungicidal toxin that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and respiratory distress in geckos.
- Chocolate โ Theobromine in chocolate is a stimulant that can lead to heart arrhythmias and seizures in small reptiles.
- Onions and Garlic โ These alliums contain compounds that can damage red blood cells, leading to anemia and weakness in geckos.
- Copper Plants โ Plants like copper vine release toxic metals into the soil and leaves, which can be absorbed by geckos through contact or ingestion.
- Cleaning Sprays โ Aerosolized chemicals and strong fumes from household cleaners can overwhelm a gecko's respiratory system and cause acute stress.
โ Generally fine for geckos
- Dubia Roaches โ These are a staple, high-protein treat that is easy for geckos to digest and rich in nutrients.
- Crickets โ A classic live food option that provides excellent exercise and mental stimulation for your pet.
- Spring Water โ Filtered or spring water is ideal for drinking and misting, as it lacks the chlorine and heavy metals found in tap water.
- Cork Bark โ Natural cork is safe for climbing and provides a naturalistic texture that helps with nail wear and grip.
- Moss โ Sphagnum or sheet moss is safe for humidity retention and provides a soft, natural substrate for hiding.
- Calcium Powder โ Dusting live food with plain calcium powder is essential for preventing metabolic bone disease in growing geckos.
- Leafy Greens โ Vegetables like collard greens and butternut squash are safe, nutritious additions to a varied diet.
- Unbleached Paper Towels โ These are a safe, easy-to-clean substrate option that is free from dyes and chemicals that could harm your gecko.
