Budgies safety guide
Many owners mistakenly assume that if a human can eat it, a budgie can too, or that non-stick coatings are harmless. In reality, budgies have incredibly sensitive respiratory systems and small bodies that cannot process many common household chemicals or materials.
π« Keep away from budgies
- Non-stick cookware β When heated, Teflon coatings release fumes that are instantly fatal to birds.
- Scented candles β The smoke and chemical fragrances irritate their delicate air sacs and lungs.
- Essential oils β Even diluted, these concentrated plant extracts can cause severe respiratory distress.
- Avocado β It contains persin, a fungicidal toxin that causes heart damage and death in birds.
- Chocolate β Theobromine is a stimulant that their small bodies cannot metabolize, leading to cardiac issues.
- Aluminum foil β It can be ingested and cause intestinal blockages or toxic metal poisoning.
- Copper wire β Chewing on it leads to heavy metal accumulation that damages the liver and kidneys.
- Onions and garlic β These alliums destroy red blood cells, causing anemia and organ failure.
β Generally fine for budgies
- Plain paper β Unprinted, uncoated paper is great for shredding and mental stimulation.
- Unbleached cotton string β Natural fibers are safe for making simple toys or perches.
- Apple slices β Remove the seeds and core, as the flesh is a healthy source of vitamins.
- Carrot sticks β Fresh, raw carrots provide beta-carotene and are a crunchy favorite.
- Plain wood perches β Use untreated, kiln-dried wood like apple or mango to prevent splinters and toxins.
- Seeds and pellets β A balanced mix of high-quality pellets and seeds forms the nutritional base of their diet.
- Clean water β Fresh, room-temperature water is essential and should be changed daily.
- Cucumber slices β High water content makes this a hydrating and low-calorie treat.
