Bearded Dragons safety guide
Owners often mistake human-friendly items for reptile-safe ones, overlooking that bearded dragons have sensitive respiratory systems and unique digestive needs. The biggest mistakes involve using scented products or decorative plants that look harmless but release toxic fumes or chemicals.
π« Keep away from bearded dragons
- Essential oil diffusers β The strong vapors can cause severe respiratory distress and lung damage in bearded dragons.
- Scented candles β They release volatile organic compounds and soot that irritate the dragon's delicate airways.
- Lilies β All parts of the plant are highly toxic and can cause kidney failure if ingested.
- Poison ivy or oak β Contact with the oils causes painful rashes and skin irritation on the dragon's belly and legs.
- Spray air fresheners β The aerosolized chemicals can lead to respiratory infections and chronic lung disease.
- Copper wire or mesh β Direct contact with copper can cause toxic burns and tissue damage to the skin.
- Dust mites in hay β Hay often contains mites that can infest the enclosure and cause skin issues or stress.
- Plastic plants with sharp edges β Cheap plastics can shed toxic particles or have sharp edges that injure the mouth or eyes.
