Axolotls safety guide
Owners often assume that if a human can touch it, an axolotl can too, but their sensitive gills and skin make them vulnerable to chemicals and temperature shocks. The biggest mistakes involve using tap water without dechlorination and adding decorative items that leach toxins or create sharp edges.
๐ซ Keep away from axolotls
- Tap water (untreated) โ Chlorine and chloramines in municipal water can burn their delicate external gills and kill beneficial bacteria.
- Copper coins or decorations โ Copper is highly toxic to amphibians and can cause fatal organ damage even in small concentrations.
- Live plants with pesticides โ Chemical residues on store-bought live plants can leach into the water and poison the axolotl.
- Sharp gravel or rocks โ Axolotls often try to eat or chew on substrate, and sharp edges can cause internal injuries or blockages.
- Scented candles โ Fumes from burning wax and fragrances can irritate their respiratory system and gills.
- Plastic bags โ If left in the tank, they pose a severe choking hazard and can be mistaken for food.
- Essential oils โ Even diluted, essential oils are toxic to amphibians and can disrupt their skin's ability to breathe.
- Aluminum foil โ It can be ingested and cause digestive blockages or release harmful ions into the water.
โ Generally fine for axolotls
- Silicone plants โ These are non-toxic, easy to clean, and won't release chemicals into the water.
- Smooth river stones โ Rounded, smooth stones are safe for decoration and won't injure the axolotl if ingested.
- Frozen bloodworms โ A staple treat that is safe when thawed properly and fed in moderation.
- Glass or ceramic bowls โ Smooth, non-porous surfaces are safe for feeding and won't harbor harmful bacteria.
- Dechlorinated water โ Using a water conditioner to remove chlorine is essential for keeping their gills healthy.
- Cooling fans โ Placed outside the tank, they help maintain the cool water temperatures axolotls need.
- Plastic mesh dividers โ Useful for separating aggressive axolotls without causing injury.
- Unbleached paper towels โ Safe for cleaning the tank or providing a soft surface for temporary housing.
