π± Introduction
Pick one up the wrong way and you'll learn fast. It won't bite. It'll just turn into a ball of spikes and huff at you until you give up.
That's the African pygmy hedgehog, Atelerix albiventris. It's the small hedgehog you see as a pet, bred from a wild species that roots around African grasslands after dark. Small body. Big attitude about being woken up.
π Key characteristics
Most adults weigh 300 to 500 grams and run 15 to 23 cm long. About the size of a large mango, if mangoes had spines.
Those spines aren't quills that shoot out, whatever cartoons told you. They're stiff hairs made of keratin, banded brown and cream, and they lie flat when the animal's relaxed. Scare it, and muscles pull them upright while the hedgehog tucks its head, legs and soft belly right inside. No gaps. Just spikes.
The face does the exploring. A long, twitching nose sniffs nonstop, and poor eyesight doesn't matter much when your nose works that well. Hearing's sharp too. Those little ears pick up insect chatter you'd never notice.
πΏ Life cycle
Pups are called hoglets, which is honestly a perfect name. They're born blind, with soft white spines hidden under swollen skin so they don't hurt their mother. Within days the spines push through. Within weeks there's a new set.
Young leave the nest at about six weeks. By then they're eating insects on their own and already sleeping through the day.
And they do sleep. A lot. Wild hedgehogs are nocturnal, active from dusk, snuffling through leaf litter for beetles, worms and fallen fruit. In captivity they usually live four to six years, sometimes longer if their weight stays sensible and they get room to roam at night.
πΊοΈ Where it lives
Wild populations spread across central Africa, from Senegal in the west to Kenya in the east. Dry savanna. Scrub. The edges of farmland.
They don't dig fancy burrows. A hollow log will do. So will a pile of leaves or an empty termite mound. Heat suits them β they get sluggish below about 24Β°C and can try to hibernate if a room stays cold, which pet animals shouldn't be allowed to do. Keep the enclosure warm, steady, and boringly predictable on temperature.
πΎ Pets and safety
They're quiet, solitary pets, and that's not code for low effort. A hedgehog needs a big wheel, nightly handling so it stays used to you, and insects and cat food checked before you serve them β not every pet food suits every animal.
Unsure about a snack or a plant in the enclosure? Check it first with the Eaoae safety checker. Wash your hands after handling, too. Hedgehogs can carry salmonella without looking sick at all.
